Occupied Silence

I started photographing people on benches in 2016. What interested me was never the bench itself, but the moment that happens around it. A small pause inside the movement of everyday life.

People sit on benches for different reasons. To rest after work. To smoke. To think. To wait for someone. To escape for ten minutes. Sometimes they sit alone, completely inside their own thoughts. Sometimes they look peaceful. Sometimes exhausted. Sometimes happy without showing it too much.

These are quiet moments that usually disappear unnoticed. Nothing dramatic is happening, yet something very human exists there. A person allowing themselves to stop for a second.

The photographs are made in different cities and during different years, but they are connected by the same feeling - silence that is not empty. Even in crowded places, these moments feel isolated, personal, almost protected from the noise around them.

“Occupied Silence” is about those temporary states between movement and stillness. About people briefly belonging to themselves before standing up and continuing their lives again.
